Meet Rebecca

Our Print & Textile Designer

Discover how our beautiful prints come to life, from drawing to dress...

After finishing her Textile Design degree, Rebecca took an internship at Phase Eight and loved it so much
she never left! A key part of our talented design team for the past 5 years, Rebecca tells us about what
inspires her and gives us an insight into her favourite print this season.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

"Seeing a print I've designed come to life on a finished garment is always really exciting! When you have an idea of how a print will be, to see it followed through and look so good in the movement of the finished dress is very satisfying."

What is your favourite SS20 print?

"Lou-Poppy: It’s such a modern floral that turned out to be so versatile. Poppies are one of my favourite flowers anyway, so this was such a great design to paint. I showed the designers my painting, then we brainstormed different colours and sizes, tried lots of different things and decided on 6 versions of the print that really worked within the collection. This means we have different styles with a similar handwriting, so they all fit together and feel so premium."

Where do you get your inspiration from?

"We were actually inspired by an amazing Andy Warhol pop-art floral for Lou-Poppy! We took the bright colour and repeated design and made it our own. I also love going to Kew Gardens, we recently spent an afternoon painting in their famous greenhouses. Portobello Market is another favourite place; it’s full of antique stalls and vintage print shops that we spend hours looking through. Instinct also plays a big part as a lot of the prints now are very much my handwriting. I know Phase Eight so well by this point!"

How do you go about creating a new print?

"I work very closely with our designers; we’re a well-established, close-knit team and bouncing around ideas is a big part of our process. We look at trends and create product stories for the season. I do paintings from that, sharing concepts and ideas. We then work out which print works best on which style."

“You can never have enough beautiful florals.”

What’s been a recent highlight for you?

"We opened a new store in Oxford and we created a unique line-drawing on one of the walls. It was the first time I’d worked on something on such a large scale; it was such a modern, fresh way for us to show our love of florals."

What makes a Phase Eight print unique?

"Florals are such an important part of who we are as a brand. You can never have enough beautiful florals! They are the central point of all our prints. We will always offer that statement floral and it will always be stunning."
